biographie-2023

photo-biographie

Catherine Bernis was born in 1955 in Limoges. She lives and works in Limoges and Paris.

Materials define the form of Catherine Bernis’s work. Her approach involves a constant exploration of everything that concerns landscape. She creates imaginary landscapes that reflect what the interior spirit and the outside universe have in common.

Using her extensive technical training in old master restoration, she reappropriates the tools, materials, and products from that world, creates fresh versions of them, and invents new forms and formats.

Her personal style has evolved over the course of various exhibitions in France and abroad, bringing together her understanding of nature, her interest in science and her inner explorations, to produce a deeply spiritual body of work.

She moved to Paris in 1973 but quickly fled the city to live for two years in the Cotentin peninsular in Normandy. She then crisscrossed the country in a campervan before finally returning to the Limousin.

Bypassing the cosmopolitan world of the 1980s, she adopted a more introspective lifestyle, in close contact with nature, and gave up picture restoration to concentrate fully on her own creative work.

As it evolved in a minimalist direction, with the elimination of many elements along the way, she became increasingly attracted to working with the colour white. A white which, in her exhibition La ville (Galerie A Contratrio, Limoges 2001), shrouded and consumed the city, its inhabitants and its forms.

During a journey to Cuba, where she exhibited in 2007 L’ile de l’espoir, she met local artists and began to fully appreciate the commitment and the risk that creativity imposed, thus asserting her own sense of responsibility as an artist.

In 2011, the series Chaos, that she exhibited at the Galerie Artset in Limoges, signalled the end of her figurative approach, as she concentrated more on an almost abstract style of painting, that combined movement, feeling and volume.

From then on, her work was dominated by the choice of material and how it was used and applied.

Progression towards complete abstraction seemed inevitable, as her 2015 exhibition Fonds marins at the Institut Francais de Slovaquie in Bratislava showed, with work showing underwater scenes where only the textures defined the delicacy of these landscapes.

Her style was thus formed: the choice of material becoming the very essence of her work, defining the form, with a preference for the colour white, as we can see in the exhibition La Peau des choses at the Galerie Pixi-Marie Victoire Poliakoff in Paris in 2016.

In L’Espace de l’Art Concret, at the Centre d’Art Contemporain in Mouans-Sartoux, in 2018, she presented the series Monades: paper sculptures where the volume and their forms created shadows and gaps, creating limitless worlds, demonstrating the freedom of a work that does not need to tell a story, nor symbolize something, in order to exist in its own right.

In Spring 2020, in the solitude of her studio, she plotted her own escape route, a flight into her own consciousness.
It was during this time of confinement that the inner landscapes emerged.
She tested the limits of her work with paper by subjecting it to water treatment, incisions, pigments and drying, thus enriching the base material, producing mysterious geometries.
This work was shown in Paris in February,
Éléments, 2021 at the Galerie Papiers d’Art.

In the series (m)ondes, shown in Paris in 2022 at the Galerie Papiers d’Art, the use of lines and fibres were at the heart of her visual work, which provided structure and form for the drawing, the material, and the thinking behind it. Lines and contours are set out like a large page of handwriting.

In the exhibition Voler et nager at the Galerie Papiers d’Art in 2023 the worlds of air and water collide with incandescent bursts of colour.

The artist experiments relentlessly with the medium of paper, revealing the richness of this material. Its flexibility allows her to produce works that are at a midpoint between drawing, painting, and sculpture.

In parallel to her main body of work, Catherine Bernis always works with notebooks. They are a real experimental research laboratory, crucial in the development of her work.
Early on she used them to remind herself what she had been reading, what she had been seeing. They allowed her to remain alert, to capture things, to give form to her feelings and her enthusiasms.
They have become an integral part of her work: the bedrock of her art.

Have written about his art: Amélie Aranguren (curator), Matthieu Gounelle (Professor at the National Museum of Natural History) and Jeanette Zwingenberger (Art historian).
